Excerpts from ‘Heru, Set and the Harmony of Humanity’
*** The story takes places primarily on a college campus where students are studying for
finals
and completing final projects.***
Heru and Imani were up early to have breakfast in a near by meadow where the air
was
crisp, clean and clear. The meadow was covered
with morning dew and sunlight glistened on the dew drops as the morning
breeze
wisped around the fragrance of blossoms and wild flowers.
They were both dressed in white and wearing Kemetic Uraeus crowns as they
walked along a trail to a large majestic tree with huge branches
located in the center of the meadow. They had been fasting together for
three days and this was the setting where they would break their fast.
Imani’s hair was in a kinky curly afro and her dangling ankh earrings
shimmered as they caught the first lights of the
morning’s rays. She was wearing
a body suit with a gold breastplate. Heru, who looked like a cross between King
Tut
and Jimi Hendrix, was wearing a two piece linen outfit and
a gold ankh around his neck. As they walked up to the
tree Imani was taken
by the peacefulness of the meadow and the constant chirping of birds.
“It’s such a beautiful morning, it’s like deep
meditation out here,” she said.
“Yeah, this morning air is so fresh that it can really clear your
consciousness,” Heru responded, as he took a deep breath and put down a cooler he
was carrying.
…Akeem hit a drum roll and Heru broke into the first verse. He winked at Imani and
she blew him a kiss. The band is powerful and they sound
great in a studio setting. As they went into the chorus Ptah turned to the
drummer and threw in a couple of bass licks, Akeem responded with
another drum roll. Jabari played some nice riffs on his Fender Rhodes piano as
Heru exploded into a guitar solo…
"Opposites dueling huh,” Heru said, thinking something
didn’t sound right. “But you know in physics, opposing forces work together?”
“I know just like light waves,” Ptah stated. “You have the
electric side and the magnetic side and they work together to create light.
The interesting thing is that they both travel along a central beam which could be
looked at as the unifying principle between the opposites.”
“Right, there’s always a third principle that unifies the opposites,” Heru
said.
“Well the unifying principle in my piece will be a beat played by
Akeem while the two bass players battle it out.”
“So let me get this straight, you think the unifying principle of
the universe is a funky beat?” They started laughing. “That’s heavy ma man.”
“Well haven’t you ever heard of cosmic funk?” Ptah asked.
“Heard of it, we play it all the time fool.”
“Well maybe from our deep cosmic beginnings there was an
impulse that vibrated into a pulse, then manifested into a beat; you feel me?”
Ptah said, laughing at his own concoction.
[Set and Kasiwa]
“Come on now,” he said, putting his phone down.
“Don’t I wine and dine you? Don’t I buy you little pieces of this and that? Baby you
know I ain’t cheap.”
“I know you buy me things,” she said, as she leaned over,
hugged his arm and kissed him on the cheek, “and I love you for that but
sometimes you seem to take me for granted.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“Sometimes I think you throw me stuff after you do something
like hit on my friend Imani.” She folded her arms and leaned back in her
chair.
“What did I just tell you?” he shouted, as he hit the table with his
fist. “Now obviously you’ve heard something about the café last night but
what you didn’t hear was that I had an ulterior motive for everything I did. And like I said,
I wasn’t hittin’ on that girl.” He picked up his phone
and started texting a message.
[Professor Unas and Quazi]
They took a walk in the courtyard and stopped at a large water fountain.
"Do you believe that a person has a purpose in life?" Quazi asked.
"Oh very much so. Another aspect of 'Knowing Thyself' is to know your
purpose in life; or your unction as it is sometimes called. Life is complex and there is an
elegant connection with the planet, nature and humanity. So by consciously feeling a part of
the whole, relating your life with the life of the planet, your purpose has fertile ground to
reveal itself to you. We are very much apart of the environment and at some point, on a very
finite level, there is a connection between science and spirituality," Professor Unas
explained.
"Is that quantum mechanics?"
"Yes, exactly, quantum mechanics is a very interesting field of
research..."
[Heru, Ptah and Professor Zoser]
“A true prophet should be able to do good things with money
because they look at life through God inspired eyes and they can’t be
corrupted by people who want to undermine the idea.”
“Well then maybe the prophets should be in control of the
money.”
“Ah, actually,” Ptah said, “The ones who are making all the
profits are in control of the money.” They started laughing.
“We must be out of our minds, and pardon the pun here,” the
professor said, “but things get out of balance when one has to continually
make more and more profits and the money is not circulating back into society and the
community.”
“Ah, is that out of our conscious mind or out of our gold,
silver, platinum and diamond mines,” Ptah joked as the professor picked up on it.
“Well those elements are like different facets of the mind you
see.” They laughed.
[Heru, Set and Jason]
“Well here’s my point,” Heru said. “Poor education creates
criminals, it creates crime and it also creates victims of crimes too. Ah here’s
that trickle down effect in action again. It’s like this; with good education across the board
we could prevent a lot of suffering in the community.
Look at it this way, if all the people around you, friends, neighbors and strangers were
content and satisfied with the money they were making
then that would give you peace of mind because you wouldn’t be in fear of being mugged for a
few dollars. That alone would lead to less stress
in the community. I’m sure the petty crime rate would drop with better education and better
salaries. You know a person’s creativity can shine
when they have more tools to work with and it seems to me that with more educated people there
would be more individuals to create new
businesses and new jobs.”
“It’s not about race at all, and you know what, we could become
more civil toward one another if we looked at the world as one people
and not a bunch of different races that have to fight each other for land and resources. In fact,
I don’t like the term race or dividing people into
different races because race implies that one race has to beat another race, or it makes one race
feel they’re better than another race; when in
actuality there’s just one humanity upon this earth...”
“…But I believe people innately know what’s right and what’s
wrong and they can distinguish between what’s good and what’s bad,”
Heru said. “Look, I don’t know if there is a devil or not, but I know people do devilish things.
Is there evil? Only when people do evil things.
It’s about control of your thoughts and control of your actions…”
